Google CEO announces $175M commitment towards racial equity

Today, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet INC, announced a number of commitments aimed at building sustainable equity for the Black community and Black users. Acknowledging the systemic racism that is intertwined and entrenched in the American social, political, and economic habitat, and citing personal experiences of members of Google’s Black Leadership Advisory Group, he emphasized their commitment to transformational and everlasting change.

“As a company, and as individuals who came here to build helpful products for everyone, Google commits to translating the energy of this moment into lasting, meaningful change. Today we are announcing a set of concrete commitments to move that work forward: internally, to build sustainable equity for Google’s Black+ community, and externally, to make our products and programs helpful in the moments that matter most to Black users, “ Pichai stated.

The $175M budget will be aimed towards building products for change, sustainable equity, creating economic opportunity, improving education, and supporting racial justice organizations. Areas emphasized included hiring, retention, and promotion of Black Googlers, establishment of anti-racial educational programs, and added support for Black physical and mental health programs.

Part of Google’s plan to build sustainable equity that would positively impact the Black+ community involved a 30% improvement in leadership representation of underrepresented groups by 2025…
