On Monday, Adam Mosserri, the CEO of Instagram announced that the Facebook owned social media was implementing new ways to celebrate, amplify and represent Black voices on Instagram. Reiterating that mere words were not enough, Mosseri pledged that Instagram was dedicated to examining ways by which their algorithms and policies, affected not just Black people, but also other underrepresented demographics on Instagram.
“We stand in solidarity with the Black community. But that’s not enough. Words are not enough. That’s why we’re committed to looking at the ways our policies, tools, and processes impact Black people and other underrepresented groups on Instagram”, Mosseri stated.
Confirming that Black users on Instagram often faced fears of content takedowns, being harassed, and shadowbanned, he promised to address the way content was distributed and filtered as well as improve representation and support for the Black community on instagram. Additionally, Instagram will review if its verification process was inclusive enough for Black people, amid concerns and questions regarding the fairness of the process.
