Joe Guitterez, the cop who wrongfully pepper-sprayed Black and Latino Army Lt. Nazario, has been fired, amid calls from Virginia Governor

In a video viewed over 9 million times on Twitter, officers Daniel Crocker and Joe Gutierrez can be seen yelling at Army Lt. Nazario to exit his newly purchased vehicle, for not driving with permanent rear plates.

Nazario, refuses to exit his vehicle, stating that he has done nothing wrong and does not understand the reason for the overwhelming use of force. Nazario also states that he is actively serving his country and later states that he is scared to come out of the car, to which Officer Gutierrez replies, “you should be”.

Both officers, who already had their weapons drawn on Nazario continue to yell at him. Gutierrez then pulls out his pepper-spray and begins to use it on Nazario, before knocking him to the ground.

On Sunday evening, the Town of Windsor announced in a statement that Gutierrez had been fired.

“The pursuit and ultimate stop resulted in the use of pepper spray against Lt. Nazario by Officer Gutierrez. As a result of this use of force, Department policy requires an internal investigation to determine the appropriateness of such actions,” the statement read. “The investigation of this event began immediately.
